Eco Mayan Takes You to San Sebastián: The Village Where the Looms Sing

San Sebastián is a village that one day burst in colors, when its streets became lined with vibrant threads hanging in the sun to dry—threads that would soon be transformed into beautiful textiles woven on traditional foot looms brought from Spain in the late 17th century.

This legacy, which arrived during colonial times, gave San Sebastián its unique identity, turning it into a national symbol of Salvadoran textile artistry. And although today the colorful threads no longer sway under the sun, the handcrafted pieces woven by local artisans remain true treasures.

These artisans are genuine artists. As they work with cotton or satin thread, their movements seem to create music. Their arms move in perfect sync: one tosses the shuttle from side to side, the other lowers the beater, while their feet rhythmically press the loom pedals. The result is a steady, almost hypnotic rhythm that accompanies the creation of each intricate design.

And what does that rhythm sound like? Batan, batan, batan…

Some say that this very sound is the origin of the term “batanecos,” the name used to refer to the people of San Sebastián. Others believe it comes from the name of the first type of fabric woven in the area, known as batan. Either way, it’s clear that the echo of the looms has left its mark—the echoes of the batán, the echoes of San Sebastián.

In Eco Mayan, we love to share our culture and traditions. That’s why we take our visitors to this charming town, where they’ll find everything from single and double hammocks to tablecloths, bedspreads, bags, and many other handcrafted goods—all made with love, patience, and incredible skill.

During the tour, you’ll learn about the entire weaving process—from winding the threads to creating colorful, intricate fabrics. You can also visit the Tourism Terminal, a site of great architectural, cultural, and urban value, now listed as Building of Cultural Heritage. This space was created to honor the rich textile history of San Sebastián. Here, travelers can admire the artisans' creations, explore the village’s story, and—if you’re feeling creative—try operating a traditional foot loom!

This center also features a play area for children and a café where visitors can relax and enjoy time with friends or family.

San Sebastián isn’t just a place to visit… it’s a place to experience, to feel the rhythm of the batán, to witness colors that tell stories, and to meet the hands of those who weave people’s identity.
