In El Salvador, every year, on the night of September 7th, Ahuachapán dresses in magic. Lights, colors, and emotions come together in a celebration that illuminates hearts and unites families: this is The Day of the Lanterns (Día de los Farolitos), held in honor of the birth of Virgin Mary.
The exact origin of this tradition is unknown, but a study by "Casa de la Cultura" (House of Culture) of Ahuachapán (2002) narrates that in 1850, after an earthquake struck on the night before the Mother of God's birthday, the town´s people got out of their homes carrying candles, lanterns, and oil lamps to pray for protection. They promised Her that every year, on this date, they would light lanterns in front of their homes as an act of faith and gratitude.
What began with just seven lanterns per family has now transformed into a spectacular luminous works of art that fill the streets, parks, and plazas, creating an unforgettable display of light.
Weeks before the celebration, families begin preparations by crafting lanterns made with cane frames and colorful cellophane paper. This artisanal tradition awakens the creativity of both children and adults, who join efforts to bring to life increasingly surprising designs.
On the night of the festival, those lanterns burst into thousands of shades of light, bathing the streets in a magical atmosphere. As an added incentive, the most original and striking creations are awarded, encouraging everyone to participate with enthusiasm.
Although it initiated in the city of Ahuachapán, the tradition has expanded to other picturesque towns along the touristic zone of The Flower Route, such as Tacuba, Concepción de Ataco, Salcoatitán, and Apaneca.

The celebration goes beyond the beauty of the lanterns. The atmosphere is enriched by the procession in honor of the Virgin Child, where faith and devotion can be felt in every hymn and prayer. At the same time, the festivity takes on a syncretic character: while some walk, in silence, praying and venerating the Virgin, others celebrate with joy, music, fireworks, and the flavor of traditional food that fills the streets.
It is a meeting point between the sacred and the festive, where everyone finds their own way to live the tradition, whether with friends or family.
A festival that is not only seen, but also lived, shared, and remembered forever. Visiting El Salvador on this date means immersing yourself in the light, the faith, and the warmth of its people.
