El Salvador is the smallest country in the Americas, but also one of the richest in beauty and culture. Distances are short here, allowing you to make the most of your time to explore, discover, and enjoy its wonders. Our ancestors called it Cuscatlán, which in Nahuat means "Place of Precious Things," and they were absolutely right.
Today, Eco Mayan wants to share with you just 10 of those “precious and wonderful things” so you’ll be inspired to come visit this incredible country.
1) San Salvador: the capital, is the oldest in Central America. It’s exciting and offers a dynamic HISTORIC CENTER, with grand plazas, the majestic National Theater, the grand Cathedral, and the beautiful National Palace. Iconic churches like El Calvario and El Rosario stand out for their architecture and the art within them. Guided tours are not just about seeing San Salvador — they’re about living its history, stories, and legends.
2) Los Volcanes Complex: in Apaneca-Lamatepec Biosphere Reserve includes 3 colossal volcanoes: Izalco Volcano (also called the “Lighthouse of the Pacific”), Lamatepec Volcano (the highest in the country), and Cerro Verde (once known as Cuntetepeque Volcano). Hiking trails range from moderate to challenging, offering adventure, breathtaking views, the satisfaction of reaching a summit, and a deep connection with nature.
Joya de Cerén Archaeological Site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the rich history it reveals, dating back 1,400 years. It was an agricultural village frozen in time under 14 layers of ashes from a nearby volcanic eruption. Interpretive visits open a window into the past, helping you understand this historic treasure and the people who lived here in the 5th century.
5) Beaches for surfing: El Salvador brags 321 km of dreamlike Pacific coastline. Because of volcanic activity, many beaches have black sand and world-class waves perfect for surfing. Destinations like El Tunco, El Zonte, Las Flores, and Punta Roca attract professional surfers from around the globe, and personalized surf lessons are available if you want to try it yourself. Fresh seafood cuisine is a delight, and sunsets painted in purple and gold, wine in hand, are pure soul therapy.
5) Coatepeque Lake: a volcanic crater lake, offers all kinds of fun water activities—kayaking, jet skiing, fishing or water skiing by boat… You can even scuba dive in the crater if you're more adventurous. The surrounding landscape of mountains and volcanoes captivates travelers, offering peaceful, contemplative moments after an action-packed day.
There lies Fonseca Gulf, inviting you to explore a volcanic archipelago by navigating between islands like Meanguera, Zacatillo, and Conchagüita within Salvadoran waters—or even crossing into Honduras or Nicaragua. From the middle of the gulf, you can see volcanoes in all three countries just by turning your head. Private boat tours help you enjoy this natural spectacle to the fullest.
7) Jiquilisco Bay: in Xirihualtique-Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve is a natural sanctuary for coastal birds, fish, and sea turtles that visit our shores each year. This inlet offers a nature safari through mangrove forests and coastal waters, with fishing communities and islands full of coconut and cashew trees. Witnessing turtle releases, artisanal fishing, and tasting the catch prepared in traditional ways is simply priceless.
8) At Trifinio Fraternidad Biosphere Reserve you’ll discover a cloud forest full of biodiversity, as well as marine fossils over 150 million years old. Our ecotourism excursions allow you to walk along ancient trails and experience one of Central America’s most important biological corridors. It is also the first Trinational Biosphere Reserve on the American continent.
9) We can’t leave out the city of Suchitoto, the colonial gem. Strolling through its cobblestone streets, visiting art galleries, joining film, culture, and indigo festivals, celebrating the Day of the Cross, and savoring the local cuisine is all part of the experience in the City of the Flower Bird. The bohemian spirit of this city is felt in its charming hotels, the artists who live there, its museums, theater, craft shops, and beautiful church. The surrounding nature invites birdwatching, lake boating, forest hikes, or discovering the unique basalt rock column waterfalls.
10) A beautiful route runs through charming towns along the Apaneca-Lamatepec mountain range. Surrounded by lush coffee plantations, you’ll find ziplines, high ropes, hot springs, colorful markets, hikes, and adventures that let you experience coffee culture in a different way. You’ll learn how coffee is planted, processed into a flavorful high-altitude cup, how to brew it using various methods, and how to identify its qualities in a tasting session. This is how you’ll know the coffee you buy on the Ruta de las Flores is among the best in the world.
At Eco Mayan, we want you to live all these “precious things” because we love creating authentic experiences in El Salvador. Whether you’re into adventure, culture, history, or just relaxing, our guides—and our deep love for our country—will ensure your journey is unforgettable.
